The Ending of The Soul Collectors
I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to contact me via email, Twitter and Facebook regarding The Soul Collectors. Given the amount of responses and questions I've received about the ending, I feel as though I owe everyone an explanation.
First off - SPOILER ALERT - if you haven't read the book, please stop reading now.
Okay, for those of you still with me, let me tell you my thought process when I was writing The Soul Collectors. As I approached the ending, I wanted Darby to come up against something completely evil. I love the endings of movies like The Blair Witch Project and The Vanishing (the Dutch version, not the horrible American remake) - an ending that is completely unexpected and unsettling. Jack Casey and his daughter disappear, and Darby is forced to carry on. I thought this would be a unique twist, a great "holy shit" moment. I thought readers would love it.
And some of you did. Others hated it; you wanted to know what happened to Casey and his daughter. Fair enough. A small handful of readers accused me of setting up an ending that purposely left the reader "hanging" in order to sell the next book. Not true. I respect my readers too much to manipulate them in such a way. In my mind, the ending was the ending. It was never brought up in the editing process (and a lot of people read the ending and didn't comment). I went to work on the next book, The Killing House, the first book in what I hope to be a series featuring Malcolm Fletcher from Deviant Ways and The Secret Friend. (I can promise you the ending to The Killing House is quite clear).
I don't believe in "writing by committee" but I do believe in giving the fans what they want. I've never done a sequel, per se, but I don't want to leave readers hanging. I'm playing around with an idea that would bring Darby back into this world. In other words, do you want a resolution? Do you want to know what happened to Jack Casey and his daughter? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Yes I want a resolution. I don't like the ending, because I don't know what happened to Jack and Casey. Normally I can handle an ending such like this but I love this book and I hope there will be a sequel.
I'm also interested to read more about Darby and Coop ;-)
I go to great lengths to get your books from bookstores in England. I love Darby - she is such a unique and strong character.
We need either a resolution to Soul Collectors or a continuation of the series. There is still so much to be done with her character. Please continue the Darby series.
I've just read all 4 Darby books in a straight run and desperately want another! Call me an old romantic but I want to see where she and Coop go as well
I loved the Soul Collectors and couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened particularly, to the evil group themselves as well as Sarah and Jack. It was disappointing to have it left up in the air!!!
I have read all your books to date. I have just ordered The Killing House as I love Fletcher. I am pleased that there is going to be more of Darby but at some point you need to incorpirate a solution to the Soul Collectors. I loved Jack Casey and Fletcher in Diviant Ways, so maybe this series could bring Fletcher and Darby together, in order to save Jack.

I read the Soul Collector in one go, I could not keep the book down. Very few authors have compelled me to do so. But when I reached the end I wanted to know more. What will Darby do now, how will she search for Jack and Sarah. Will Coop help her?
So please, continue to write a sequel, it important to all your readers.
Wow! ok I just read this audio book over the last week and finished it tonight. The ending was insanely frustrating and I immediately jumped on Google to see if there is a sequel, which is how I arrived at your blog. I see that there is another book in this series in the pipeline, but it’s not a sequel which is driving me crazy. There were way too many unanswered questions such as what happened to Jack and Sarah, and what happened to the arkon? Clearly the group wasn’t entirely wiped out, otherwise how did the photo get in to the coffee maker, and what about the phone call. It was a great book, but I almost wish I hadn’t read it because I’m left with more questions unanswered, than were answered by the conclusion... A great read, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone, but thumbs down for the ending :)
Loved the book, for me it was up there with Red Dragon. The only problem i had was that i never believed that the archeons, given their power and unrelenting evil,would ever leave Darby or anyone she cared about, be. If theres ever a sequel you've got one reader waiting with bated everything.
The deadly Australian spider is a "Funnel-web", not a "Tunnel web".
New Zealand has a "Black tunnelweb" spider, but it's bite is the equivalent of a bee sting.
Sorry about the ending to the soul collectors which was a great book. Felt as if you had become bored or had better things to do than write a good ending. A shame as it spoiled the whole effect of the book.
Absolutely agree with a large number of readers. The story really needs wrapping up or the story continued.
But petering out as it did seemed, em.....wrong
A powerful character really can't just go off to lose her mind with PTSD, and heartbreak. Darby kicks ass, uses her mind, and gets things done. Having a brilliant, strong and driven character just flame out while leaving the story to just drop off into depressing nothingness isn't who Darby is. Blair witch ended with no ending because those were dumb kids in the woods. Darby went to Harvard! She crushed it in SWAT training! She doesn't let things go. Her tenacity makes her a character that holds our interest. Ive been listening to your whole Darby series while in bed with pneumonia. I like your books because you cover everything. Everything falls into place, and you are full of twists and surprises on the journey. But even with the creativity that my cough and pain medicines infuse into things- I was left frustrated and disappointed.
Darby isn't a weepy girl spiraling down a depressing road of paranoia and fear- she is a total badass with crazy smarts and a strategic mind. Painting her as anything less is just a total buzzkill. You are smart to ask for input, and obviously tenacious in your own right- imagine yourself as the character. How do you want YOUR story to end? In a fit of sobbing over lost love? Fishing for information about the guy that got the love of your life? You aren't that guy, you don't want to be painted as 'that guy', and the character that you have created is too vibrant to go out like that.
I would love more story regarding the soul collectors. I would be happy to see Darby team up with Malcolm Fletcher and take these folks out of play. There is so much real evil in the actual world that seems unstoppable, I suppose I read these books to enjoy an absolute victory of good against bad. I did like the ending but I thought there would eventually being another book. I can't imagine the Archon (sp?) being content to let a challenge like Darby escape her/his clutches.

Just finished the soul collectors. The first book of yours that I have read... and the last... a great book with a crap ending. Your attempt to be artsy with your ending comes off as a cheap trick. Don't plan to fall for this again.
